Media@McGill offers occasional graduate student travel grants. Details for the competition are presented below. For a list of students awarded Media@McGill travel grants in previous competitions, click here.
To fund: Travel to conferences, workshops, summer schools; research travel; for projects relating to issues and controversies in media, technology, culture and their ethical interplay.
Eligibility: Graduate students in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies, or affiliated with a faculty member of Media@McGill, are eligible to apply. Students must demonstrate that they have applied for other sources of funding, where applicable, including funding for accommodation (e.g. McGill Alma Mater Fund, Faculty of Arts graduate travel awards, funding from a conference/institute).
Application: All dossiers must include the following materials:
1. A brief (200 words max.) description of travel and event/institution to be attended.
2. Accompanying documentation about the event/institution, indicating acceptance of the applicant if possible.
3. An abstract or summary of the paper to be presented/research to be accomplished.
4. A summary of how the travel fits in with Media@McGill's mission statement.
5. The amount requested.
6. (Sent separately): A brief (one paragraph) letter from the applicant's supervisor indicating appropriateness of travel for applicant's research program.
Amounts: $250-$1000 depending on need and availability of funds.
Criteria: Applications will be considered for quality, need, opportunity and their fit with Media@McGill's mission.
Disbursement: Reimbursement for receipted expenses.
Conditions: All recipients agree to be identified as Beaverbrook Traveling Scholars and to acknowledge the support of the Beaverbrook Fund for Media@McGill in material produced with aid of these funds. In cases of travel to deliver presentations, applicants must agree to publish their paper on the Media@McGill website. In cases of travel to summer schools, workshops, or for research, applicants must agree to provide a one-page synopsis of the work accomplished using these funds for publication on the website.
NB: funds cannot be awarded for events taking place prior to the application deadline.
