"Faye Hammill is best known in Canada for her groundbreaking work on Canadian literature, and for her promotion of Canadian literature in the British context. Her new work looks at the idea of the "sophisticated" magazine, at titles like the New Yorker and Smart Set, and how they spread ideas about high living and good taste around the world and outside of major cities. Much of her work now deals with the idea of "middlebrow" culture, the culture of the educated middle classes who used magazines as one tool in their urge to become sophisticated." says Acting Director Will Straw.
