Le Devoir: Civil society orgs. urge QC Minister of Justice to take action against strategic law

Submitted by hive on

Civil society organizations urge Quebec Minister of Justice, Mr. Jacques Dupuis, to take action against strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP). SLAPPs are illustrative of a larger phenomenon of legal intimidation directed against citizens who publicly expressed concern over an issue of public interest. These lawsuits are attempts to mobilize key characteristics of the legal system – and especially its expensive nature – in order to intimidate political opponents, to divert them from their actions, or to silence them. There is actually no anti-SLAPP legislation in force in Canada.
