Professor Jonathan Sterne, whose research focuses on the convergence between media technologies and sound, gives a historical account of the Quebec student protesters' banging of pots and pans in today's The Globe and Mail.

In his opinion piece, Professor Sterne writes how the students' choice of protest against tuition hikes - taking to the streets of Quebec and banging casseroles - comes from a long history of cacophony as a call for order, beginning with the tradition of charivari.
