Discredited UK Press Complaints Commission to Shut Down Following Phone Hacking Scandal

The Press Complaints Commission announced today its decision to close after 21 years as Britain's newspaper watchdog. As the industry's self-regulator, the Commission has overseen all complaints and ethical controversies brought against the British press in its two decades. However, it failed considerably in its inability to address the severity of the phone hacking scandal early on. A transitional regulatory body will be put in place until a replacement for the PCC can be established following the close of the Leveson inquiry and Lord Justice Leveson's report this autumn.
