In honour of March 8th, International Women's Day, l'Université de Montréal and McGill University are proud to host the Montreal launch of Voices on the Rise: Afghan Women Making the News. The exhibit will be open for public viewing at l'Université de Montréal from March 8th - March 20, 2007, it will then move to McGill University from March 21st - April 3rd, 2007.
In collaboration with the Embassy of Afghanistan, Media@McGill and The McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism and l'Université de Montréal welcome this important exhibition highlighting the link between Afghan women's participation in media and politics and the reconstruction of their country.
Voices on the Rise: Afghan Women Making the News offers a glimpse into the lives of Afghan women journalists, producers, media managers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, human rights activists and parliamentarians. True revolutionaries, these women have found a voice through the media, and through that work are helping to ensure that all Afghan women are given a voice. Their lives are challenging, fascinating and often harrowing as they juggle newfound freedoms with traditional responsibilities amid the constraints and ravages of life in a war zone.
The exhibition features the work of Afghan, Canadian and international photographers.
It will be officially opened by H.E. Omar Samad, Afghanistan
Ambassador to Canada and co-curators Khorshied Samad and Jane McElhone.
